Steak belongs on the grill, with a crowd ready to enjoy it. It doesn't have to be complicated or gourmet to impress. Steak recipes are important, but the perfect BBQ steak requires more than knowing how long to cook steak on a grill for, or how to grill a steak medium-rare. This is about making tasty steak, without the fuss.

Let's get to work. Here's how to gain the BBQ superpower that beats any recipe book.

Marinating is a fuss-free way of making your steak recipe taste like it's been passed down through generations of pitmasters. It's hands-on and it's all you. But relax: you're not doing the hard work here. Have faith in the sauce.

    3. Seal it in a tub or zip-lock bag and leave it in the fridge for eight hours. Job done.

If you're in a rush, you can marinate for two hours, but trust us, you'll notice the difference a night can make to your meat.

Like every BBQ master, you'll know you've got to prep your meat properly before even thinking about how to BBQ steak. These straightforward tips have got your back.

    • Feed a crowd. It's easier to cook one steak than several, right? You're going to have the whole gang round, so go for a large steak – such as a ribeye. It'll feed a few and you won't forget how long to cook each steak on the grill for.
    • Get the right cut. Go for a thick cut so it stays juicy on the grill. Get your butcher to cut it to at least 4cm thick.
    • Let your meat relax. Take your steaks out of the fridge 30 minutes before you're going to chuck them on the grill – it'll help them cook more evenly.
    • Be a seasoned seasoner. The best way to season steak is in advance. Brush on a bit of olive oil and sprinkle it with a healthy amount of salt and pepper at least 30 minutes before it hits the grill. Salt helps break down the proteins for maximum tenderness.
    • How long do you grill steak for? Less time than you'd think. Meat continues to cook after you've taken it off the grill. Try to take it off just before it looks ready to eat.
    • … and the rest. It's not all about how to BBQ steak. Resting it for the right amount of time is just as key. Aim for 5-20 minutes depending on the size.

We'd recommend you go with your gut, but if you want to be precise, use a digital thermometer. These temperatures are the rule of thumb for getting the perfect BBQ steak.

    • Rare: 55°c
    • Medium-rare: 62°c
    • Medium: 70°c
    • Well-done: 75°c
    • Knowing how to BBQ and grill steak is as straightforward as that. Get the right cut, leave enough time for marinating and resting, and you're sorted.
